Virginia Sheriff Says Newborn Baby Mauled By Wolf-Hybrid Dog

A Virginia sheriff says a wolf-hybrid dog is responsible for the death of an 8-day-old newborn baby after it mauled the baby to death.

According to Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons, the attack happened at the family's house in Lee County, Virginia while the baby was in her bassinet. Parsons said the baby suffered extensive injuries to her upper body and head.

The newborn died at a hospital from her injuries hours later after being mauled by a "large shepherd-type" wolf-hybrid dog. The dog was euthanized Thursday afternoon after the attack on the 8-day-old.

The department was responding to a call about the mauling Wednesday morning, but the baby was already heading for the hospital when officers arrived.

Social services are checking on the two other children who live in the home the Lee County Sheriff's Department said.

The sheriff says he's checking with the commonwealth's attorney to see if any charges may be filed against anyone to hold them responsible for the child's death.

The identities of those involved have not been released at this time.
