Florida Motorcyclist Dies After Getting Struck By Lightning

A 45-year-old motorcyclist was killed after he was struck by lightning while riding south through central Florida on Interstate 95. The bolt of lightning cracked the rider's helmet and caused him to lose control of his bike and crash into the center median.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unclear he was killed by the lightning bolt or by the ensuing accident. The identity of the biker has not been released by authorities.

Officials from the Florida Highway Patrol shared a photo of his cracked helmet on Twitter.

"This is what's left of a 45-year-old man's helmet after he was struck by lightning, while riding his motorcycle southbound, on I-95 in Volusia County this afternoon. Unfortunately he did not survive the crash."

The odds of being struck by lightning are very low, and the odds of dying from the strike are even lower. According to ABC News, you have a 1 in 13,000 chance of being struck, while 90% of Americans who have been struck survive.
